Gualala Rotary is part of Rotary International (RI), District 5130, and part of our members’ annual dues go to Rotary International.
Rotary International is an old and historic humanitarian organization, founded in Chicago in 1905 by Paul Harris. He formed the Club so that professionals of all backgrounds could exchange ideas and make new friends. The Club’s reach gradually expanded into humanitarian service, and today Rotary International has clubs on six continents and over 1.2 million members.. Gualala Rotary has provided over $100,000 to Rotary International to support these international humanitarian projects.
RI takes on some very big challenges and has had some equally big successes. In 1979, Rotary International joined with others to eradicate polio, where is was endemic in 125 countries. Today that number is down to 2.
The 2021-2022 focus for Rotary International is literacy, especially for girls and women, where, in certain countries, literacy can be a life-or-death issue. RI’s President, Shekhar Mehta, from India, pioneered medical and literacy programs in India, so he knows the tough road ahead
As president Mehta is urging members to get involved in 2021-22 in the final steps to end polio, to fight disease and provide clean water, sanitation, and good health care, to support education and literacy especially for females.
